When your system packs a GPU like the RTX 5090 which easily gulps down 650W or more under full load and is paired with a high-end CPU like the Core i9-14900K or Ryzen 9 9950X that can pull over 200W on its own, a 1000W power supply is the bare minimum you should be considering.

For our latest test bench, which fits that exact description, we needed a reliable PSU that could handle this monstrous combo without breaking a sweat. Thanks to FSP, we got our hands on the Hydro PTM Pro 1650W, an absolute powerhouse built for setups like ours. Besides its 80 PLUS Platinum certification, what makes this unit stand out is the inclusion of the new 12V-2×6 connector, which has been reported to be a much safer replacement for the previous 12VHPWR standard – shoutout to Hardware Busters for those test results.

Let’s dive in and see how the Hydro PTM Pro 1650W holds up.

Unboxing

Right out of the box, FSP makes it very clear that the Hydro PTM Pro 1650W supports the new 12V-2×6 connector, clearly highlighted on the packaging so you won’t miss it, especially if you’re shopping for a next-gen GPU-friendly PSU.

Other than that, it comes with all the essentials you’d expect from a high-end, fully modular unit. That includes an ATX 24-pin cable, two EPS 8-pin cables, four PCIe 6+2-pin cables, two SATA power cables, two SATA & Molex combo cables, and of course, the all-important 12V-2×6 cable. You also get Velcro straps, mounting screws, and a power cord bundled in.

It also features a physical Eco switch for semi-fanless operation, giving you the option to run completely silent under light loads—a nice touch for noise-sensitive users.

Design & Connectors

At 190mm in length, the Hydro PTM Pro 1650W is larger than your standard 150mm ATX PSU, so make sure your case has enough clearance before hitting the checkout button. The lack of warranty stickers on the fan grille screws is a nice bonus, which makes it easier to pop the top for dust cleaning, provided you know what you’re doing.

Looking at the connector layout, it’s pretty much standard for FSP’s higher-end models, but with the addition of two 12V-2×6 ports and three PCIe 6+2-pin headers. You’ll also find dedicated headers for your CPU, motherboard, and peripherals like SATA and Molex.

At the back, you get a honeycomb exhaust grille along with the Eco mode switch, which keeps the fan off below 30% load for whisper-quiet performance when the system is idle or under light use.

In regular usage scenarios like web browsing, video streaming, or casual gaming, even a high-end system like ours stays under 400W in power draw. During these lighter tasks, the PSU stays cool around 40°C and the fan doesn’t spin at all – which is exactly what you want for a quieter setup.

We pushed the system further with a series of benchmarks – ROG RealBench, Cinebench R23, Prime95, 3DMark, and Procyon. Power draw hovered between 960W and 1030W under load, which is still comfortably within the PSU’s rated output. The max internal PSU temp we saw during stress tests was just 57°C, which is well within spec.

As for the new 12V-2×6 connector, we’ve had zero issues so far. It remained only mildly warm to the touch, even under the heaviest loads. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a second RTX 5090 on hand to test multi-GPU scaling but if you’re planning on that kind of ridiculous setup, this PSU is likely still up to the task.

Verdict

The FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1650W delivers exactly what you’d expect from a premium platinum-rated PSU. It handled our high-performance test bench with ease, delivered rock-solid voltage stability, and maintained cool temps even under heavy load.

At RM1,399, it might be a bit of an investment but given the 10-year warranty, robust performance, and solid build quality, we’d say it’s well worth the asking price. If you’re already splashing out on top-tier components like the RTX 5090, there’s no point cutting corners on your PSU, and FSP has proven time and time again that they know how to build reliable power supplies.

If you’re planning your next ultra-high-end PC build, the FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1650W is absolutely worth shortlisting.
