With how rare a gaming GPU at MSRP could be in 2025, any common person, if given the chance, would snag them when they see one, and it would be a no-brainer if one could receive them for free, even if it may cost them “everything”.
Citing Tom’s Hardware on what has been reported by Fast Technology: There’s this one Shanghai company that sent one of its interns to Suzhou for an NVIDIA roadshow on November 14 – pretty standard for any business-focused conference or exhibition. What started the whole ordeal was the lucky draw opened for participants of the roadshow, and sure enough, the fresh intern beat everyone’s luck and managed to get his hands on a brand-new GeForce RTX 5060 that’s good for almost any 1080p and 1440p gaming in 2025.
Yet later that night, a coworker told him that the finance department had already claimed the prize belonged to the company since they funded the trip, so he should hand it over. He later realised the other departments knew nothing about this, which made it look a lot more like jealousy than actual policy. Still, word spread, and soon the company officially stepped in.
Management insisted the GPU should be surrendered because attending the event was part of a company-paid trip, arguing he wouldn’t have had the chance to win without them sending him. The intern pushed back, saying it was a luck-based raffle he entered personally. Neither side backed down, and eventually higher-ups started pressing him with repeated questions.
In the end, the company didn’t confiscate the GPU, but HR told him to start looking for another job. He resigned that same night, which in my opinion, is the GOAT response since he basically saw how “toxic” and “self-centered” the company could be. Also, it’s like RMB3000 worth, or maybe a bit more. Just buy it off him if your company really needs a gaming GPU for what, AI workloads?
Meanwhile, legal experts are siding with the intern (ex-intern now eh), stating that raffle prizes won by chance belong to the individual holding the winning ticket unless company policy explicitly states otherwise.
So yeah, my guy got a free business trip, snagged a free GPU, and managed to escape the hellhole of a company. A complete 3:0 win for the fella.
