How to choose speakers for your computer: key parameters
Power
First and foremost, this characteristic indicates the mechanical reliability of computer speakers. The manufacturer may specify both the total power of the audio system and the power of each individual channel (all satellites plus the subwoofer). If the specification states a power of 50 W, this means that the dynamic head can withstand a signal of the specified power. If the manufacturer specifies the power of the front speakers, then you can see the relationship with their maximum volume.
A power of 2-6 W is sufficient for an office computer when impressive sound quality is not required.
Models with a power of 8-10 W can be used with a home computer, but you will have to listen to music at close range.
Speakers with a power of 10 to 20 W allow you to achieve a decent volume, sufficient for a room with an area of 10-12 m2.
You will need 40 to 60 watts of power if you plan to use computer speakers with a home theatre system.
Cabinet material
In PC speakers, the cabinet performs an important function: it shields extraneous sounds coming from the back of the speakers. Therefore, the better the sound insulation of the casing, the better the sound quality we will get at the output.
Plastic speakers are usually inexpensive and compact, and the manufacturer can experiment with their shape and colour as they wish. However, they are not capable of producing low frequencies, can rattle even at medium volume, and do not produce a clear sound.
Wooden speakers are more often made of MDF rather than solid wood. But even this material makes the sound more voluminous and clear, especially at low and mid frequencies. Wooden speakers are always heavier and more expensive than plastic ones with other characteristics being equal, but they have a rather conservative design.
Metal speakers look and cost expensive, and fit well into a hi-tech interior. Their sound quality is roughly the same as that of wooden speakers.
